Old Postcards

Europe, a half-century or so ago

This one-time foreign exchange student had long school breaks in Winter and Summer of 1975. What to do? Get some cheap slide film, travel all over the place. Take pictures of whatever caught the eye. What do we have? Europe before there was internet, Europe before all the quaint places were painted in loud colors for web consumption.
And what happens to slides that sat for half a century? Magenta or yellow skies. Shadows turn rusty-red. Dust-particles adhere, and chemically react with the dyes. What to do? Get them digitized (Take a picture of each slide). Do correction of exposure and contrast. Edit with 3 sliders to see if there is any blue in the sky, and to make stone look like it was naturally quarried centuries ago, and not cast recently with custom-colored resins.
Our result? The antique look of old postcards, brought down from the attic.

In Memoriam: Ruth Wanamaker, my mother.
She encouraged me to travel and get some pictures, and
sent me railpasses for the school breaks.
